A man who spent more than 26 years as a fugitive has been extradited from Nicaragua and returned to Galveston County, authorities said.
Roberto Moran Perez was convicted in 2000 of aggravated sexual assault of a child and indecency with a child. He received sentences of 16 years and 10 years, but fled before sentencing, according to the Galveston County Sheriff’s Office.
Perez was extradited Oct. 28 following an international effort that included an INTERPOL Red Notice. He is being held in the Galveston County Jail pending transfer to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.
The Sheriff’s Office said the operation involved the Galveston County District Attorney’s Office, the U.S. Marshals Service, the U.S. Department of Justice and the U.S. Department of State.
