Sewage spill forces Long Beach coastal swimming areas to close

A sewage spill in Long Beach prompted health officials to order all coastal swimming areas to shut down until further notice, it was announced Saturday.

About 27,000 gallons of sewage spilled near the area of Livingston Drive and 2nd Street at about 6:30 p.m. Friday, the city said in a notice. Ocean Blue Environmental has since been contracted by the city to help with cleanup efforts. The cause of the spill was due to a “force main break.”

“The spill was associated with a force main break, a pressurized pipe to convey wastewater,” the city’s notice read. “Long Beach Utilities has rerouted flow using a bypass line.”

Environmental experts are monitoring water quality in the city’s coastal beaches to determine when it’s safe to return to them. The city said specialists will monitor the water until samples comply with state recreational water standards.
